A RI&E helps to manage risks in your company. It is mandatory for all employers. In this context we will answer 7 questions for entrepreneurs.
RI&E is the abbreviation for Risk Inventory and Evaluation. This is an important tool to address risks in your business and how to solve them. In doing so, first all health- and safety risks will be handled.
Secondly, a plan of action will be made in which the needed measures will be described. Finally, the plan of action has to be implemented and kept up-to-date. By doing so, you will contribute to a good health and safety policy.
A RI&E is mandatory for all organizations with employees. The inspection of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment (SZW) will check whether organizations comply with this rule. In most cases the inspections are without any announcements.
During the annual Week of the RI&E, the presence of a RI&E is being checked (by telephone and writing). When a proper RI&E is missing, there is opportunity for recovery.
A RI&E is not only important because of the legal obligation. The benefit of a RI&E is that it contributes to a safe and healthy working environment in your company.
The RI&E will result in less accidents and a higher employee satisfaction. This results in higher productivity and a better position on the labour market. Often, it is proved that companies with an active health and safety policy, manage other processes better too.
A prevention officer assists with the making of a RI&E. He/she works in cooperation with the Works Council or employee representation. When there is not such a body then employees should at least have the opportunity to give advice regarding the RI&E.
For organisations with 25 employees or more it is mandatory to have the RI&E reviewed. In this case a certified Occupational Health Service or Specialist will check whether the RI&E complies with all regulations.
For companies with a staff number below 25 employees there is an exemption when they make use of a certified RI&E tool.
When the organization employs for less than 40 hours per week they can use the Checklist Staff Risks, without the need for review.
To execute a RI&E is mainly a matter of time investment. The prevention officer has to have enough time available. When a mandatory review is demanded then there will be direct additional costs.
For the review, a certified Occupational Health Service or Specialist has to be consulted. In some cases the insurance providers offer assistance as part of their absence or accidental insurance.
